Descriptive Writing Activities for Fifth Grade:

Shopping List
Submitted by Diane Kremer - Friend Elementary
Adapted from 6+1 Traits of Writing by Ruth Culham

This activity is great for descriptive writing as well as the "voice" trait. I usually break out the thesaurus for this.

Brainstorm a grocery list with the class. Invite students to write a paragraph about one or two of the items on the list in an original, thoroughly entertaining way. See who can come up with the most imaginative descriptions. After editing and revising, have student add a drawing to be displayed with their writing.

Sample:
Hey, Mom! Remember to get some pork that is so yummy and delicious it makes me want to jump up and down yelling. Oh Ya! Better go soon, it's the Christmas season and the pork might be gone since it's to die for.

Mom, will you please get me three boxes of ice cream for my club party? Don't get plain vanilla or chocolate. Get mint chocolate chip, cookie dough, and peppermint kind. Don't get the Schwann's ice cream, bet the Blue Bunny Brand. The Blue Bunny box is the blue with a bunny on top. Mom, will you also get me can of hot fudge? it is in a little glass container with a brown lid. Our club also needs some more hand sanitizer. Will you get the smelly kind? (edited)
